Vaccinating moms and older siblings against whooping cough may prevent infants from coming down with the infection, a new study suggests. Whooping cough typically isn't dangerous in adults, but it can make babies very sick. Because there isn't a vaccine for newborns, some experts recommend "cocooning" - vaccinating everyone who lives with an infant - as a strategy for protection. An alternative that's been proposed is vaccinating pregnant women only against whooping cough, which is also known as pertussis.
"Everyone agrees that there's more pertussis circulating and there is more infant pertussis and more deaths," said Dr. Janet Englund, an infectious diseases researcher from Seattle Children's Hospital. "More people need to be vaccinated and no one is going to be against vaccinating and cocooning," she told Reuters Health. "The question is, is it sufficient?"

Print-At-Home Vaccines?

Printable Vaccines?
Via: Popularmechanics
The swine flu epidemic of 2009 wasn’t as bad as many health experts feared, yet around the world the flu killed thousands of people—many of whom would have lived if a vaccine had reached them in time. For 2010 PM Breakthrough Leadership Award winner Craig Venter, that frustration led to inspiration.
According to Wired, Venter was working with Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard during the H1N1 outbreak in 2009, but red tape delayed efforts to get the vaccine out of the city and stem the spread of the virus. For Venter, who created the first man-made microbe and revolutionized DNA sequencing techniques, the mess sparked an idea. He’s now developing a 3D printer that would let consumers download and print out vaccines from their own homes.
Theoretically, print-at-home vaccines could decentralize the supply chain, making protection available as soon as the vaccine has been created. That could be helpful even when it comes to the seasonal flu vaccine. Every year, researchers from the CDC and WHO create the vaccine based on an educated guess as to which strains will be common during the flu season. "Experts must pick which viruses to include in the vaccine many months in advance," the CDC explains, "in order for vaccine to be produced and delivered on time." But if you could print the vaccine in your own home, health authorities potentially would not have to predict which flu strains to combat so far in advance.

A recently updated United States Food and Drug and Administration (FDA) website reported a change in the labeling and safety warning for the vaccine Rotarix (Rotavirus Vaccine, Live, Oral) Oral Suspension. The FDA website which was updated October 17, under the September 2012 dated headline, reads, "In a post marketing, observational study conducted in Mexico, cases of intussusception were observed in temporal association within 31 days following the first dose of Rotarix, with a clustering of cases in the first 7 days."
Under the page's March 2011 detailed view of Rotarix's safety labeling changes approved by the FDA Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, it reads "Infants with a history of intussusception should not receive Rotarix. In postmarketing experience, intussusception resulting in death following a second dose has been reported following a history of intussusception after the first dose."

China will build two drone military bases in Liaoning province for marine surveillance purposes, officials said Saturday. One base will be built in the coastal city of Yingkou to cover the Bohai Sea area and the other will be constructed in Dalian city to cover parts of the Yellow Sea within the province's jurisdiction, Xinhua News Agency reported.
The bases will feature high-definition, remote-sensing marine surveillance cameras to help authorities respond more quickly to emergency situations, the oceanic and fishing department of the provincial government said. They will also be used to identify illegal land reclamation activities and sand dredging, and monitor marine environments along the coast and on islets.

DARPA-Funded Radio HackRF Aims To Be A $300 Wireless Swiss Army Knife For Hackers

DARPA HACK TECH
Via: Forbes
Since the days of Alan Turing, the promise of a digital computer has been that of a universal machine, one that can be a word processor one minute and a robot brain the next. So why are radios, a technology even older than computers, still designed stubbornly to do one thing–like 3G, Wifi, FM, or GPS–for their entire lives?
In fact, the era of the single-purpose radio is over, says Michael Ossmann, the founder of an Evergreen, Colorado company called Great Scott Gadgets. And he believes he’s built the one cheap, hacker-friendly radio to rule them all.
At the ToorCon hacker conference in San Diego Saturday, Ossmann and his research partner Jared Boone plan to unveil a beta version of the  HackRF Jawbreaker, the latest model of the wireless Swiss-army knife tools known as “software-defined radios.” Like any software-defined radio, the HackRF can shift between different frequencies as easily as a computer switches between applications–It can both read and transmit signals from 100 megaherz to 6 gigaherz, including frequencies as low as the range used by FM radio up to the gigaherz frequencies used by Wifi or experimental wireless protocols for cars communicating in traffic. In between those bookends lies everything from police radio to cellular signals from AT&T and Verizon to garage door openers–all signals that HackRF can instantaneously intercept or reproduce. And at Ossmann’s target price of $300, the versatile, open-source devices would cost less than half as much as currently existing software-defined radios with the same capabilities.

Pregnant Women Being Vaccinated?

Pregnant women in Dinnington are being urged to get vaccinated against whooping cough to offer protection to their newborn babies. The Department of Health announced the free vaccinations would be offered following a rise in the number of cases and because newborn babies are particularly vulnerable to it.
The temporary vaccination programme aims to boost the short-term immunity passed on by pregnant women to their newborn babies who can’t be vaccinated themselves until they are two -months-old. There have been nine infant deaths as a result of whooping cough this year, and 302 cases of the disease in children under three-months-old.
Dr John Radford, director of public health at NHS Rotherham, said: “It’s vital that babies are protected from the day they are born – that’s why we are offering the vaccine to pregnant women, from the 28th week of pregnancy.”“Over the last year there has been a large rise in the number of whooping cough cases with the most serious cases being in children too young to be protected by routine vaccinations.”“If you are pregnant, getting vaccinated is the best way you can protect your baby against whooping cough.”

Predator Military Contractors: Privatizing the Drones

Coming to a future near you!
Via: Huffingtonpost
About three and a half years ago I wrote that "One might note that with regard to future battlefields the use of contractors is like the use of robots. They promise both greater cost-effectiveness and less loss of life of government soldiers." With the advantage of hindsight it turns out that the use of robots is heavily dependent on the use of contractors. It seems that today's Terminators, such as unmanned aerial systems (UAS) -- drones -- are heavily dependent on mere mortals.
Perhaps that should not come as such a surprise. After all, anyone who ever saw Arnold Schwarzenegger act in the Terminator movies understands how much he depended on the abilities of others in order to produce a successful movie. Still, the extent to which today's contractors are involved in maintaining and operating the U.S. premier robot system, aerial drones, will likely come as a surprise to you. It certain did to me after reading the article, "Drone-Sourcing? United States Air Force Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Inherently Governmental Functions, and the Role of Contractors," published last month in George Washington University's Federal Circuit Bar Journal.

Californians who want to secure vaccine exemptions for their children must provide proof that they have received “information regarding the benefits and risks of the immunization and the health risks of specified communicable diseases,” according to a bill Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law Sept. 30.
The measure, proposed by Sacramento pediatrician Rep. Richard Pan, MD, MPH, says the form attesting that parents have been informed about the risks and benefits of vaccination must be signed by a “health care practitioner.” That is defined in the law as a medical doctor, osteopathic doctor or credentialed school nurse, or a nurse practitioner, physician assistant or naturopath with legal prescribing authority. The law takes effect in January 2014.

Perpetual Walking Robot is Powered by its Own Weight

This innocuous-looking robot has no power source, no “brain,” and no sensors of any kind. Yet it is a revolutionary piece of technology thanks to its unique method of locomotion: it basically falls and catches itself over and over. As long as it moves downhill, it can use its potential energy to keep moving indefinitely.
Developed by the Sano Lab at the Nagoya Institute of Technology, this passive walking robot only needs a push from a human hand to start walking. In 2010 it walked a continuous 15 km over 13 hours, setting a new record in the Guinness Book of Records.

Forced Vaccination In India

Via: Kenranews
The humanity of India washes up at its train stations. Passengers sprawling among vagrants wait for trains, while sweepers halfheartedly shuffle brooms in the heat. It's Sunday, Day 1 of Immunization Week. During national campaigns, which occur twice a year, 2 million volunteers fan out to India's train stations, bus depots, temples, churches and mosques, armed with vials of polio vaccine. Checking progress at a city slum, Delhi's Polio Eradication Program chief, Dr. C.M. Khanijo, says the vaccine must be kept at around 35 degrees Fahrenheit — even when the temperature outside is 109 degrees. "The quality of the vaccine remains better if it is maintained in the cold chain," he says. "And the cold chain is maintained by keeping ice or ice packs."

Army's all-seeing, super blimp makes debut flight

Via: Securityblogscnn  The U.S. Army has launched the debut flight of its massive Long Endurance Multi-Intelligence Vehicle (LEMV), a souped-up blimp designed to fly continuously for 21 days and provide full surveillance of an area.
The LEMV was launched Tuesday from Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey. The test flight lasted about 90 minutes. The all-seeing airship is longer than football field and taller than a seven-story building, according to maker Northrop Grumman. Its shape separates the 21st-century "hybrid air vehicle," as Northrop Grumman calls it, from the blimps that have flown over sporting events for decades.
The LEMV is aerodynamic, with a shape closer to an airfoil than an elongated football like classic blimps. So while old-school blimps stay aloft because of the helium inside, the LEMV uses the helium and its shape to achieve lift. Northrop Grumman has a $517 million contract to build three airships for the Army.

Robo-Rugrat: Cyborg Baby

Via: Gajitz
If you needed any further proof of the impending robot apocalypse, this squirming baby ‘bot should put your remaining doubts to bed once and for all. Built by UK company CNFX Workshop, the bundle of skeletal terror even has a super-creepy name: Nigel Fotherington Cyborg.
The terribly lifelike movements of the robot baby will eventually bring it to a kind of half-life after it receives its artificial skin. It will allegedly be used for some sort of television show, but we know better. Little Nigel is obviously meant to be the face of the robot revolution. And according to the creators of this terror, the clients it was built for were completely fooled once the creepy thing got its skin: they thought little Nigel was a real, human baby until they were told differently.

Ontario Wants Mandatory Flu Shots for Health Care Workers

Via: TheStar
Ontario’s public health agency is calling for the flu shot to be mandatory for all health-care workers in the province, urging it to be a condition of employment in hospitals, nursing homes, home care or in any kind of community setting.
Public Health Ontario changed its best practice guidelines last week because voluntary use of the annual influenza vaccine has not been as high as the agency would like. The average vaccination rate for health-care workers in the province is stuck below 60 per cent. “It is a great privilege to be able to serve in health care in this country. With privilege comes responsibility,” said Dr. Mary Vearncombe, chair of the agency’s infectious diseases advisory committee. “The way to provide the safest care with regard to influenza is to be immunized.”
British Columbia recently legislated that health-care workers get immunized or wear masks while treating patients. But Ontario Health Minister Deb Matthews has said she is not considering mandatory immunizations at this time. “We are, however, targeting front line health-care workers to increase vaccination rates.”

Did Seniors Receive A Pneumonia Vaccine on Accident?

Trauma Emotional & Physical
Via: Readingeagle
A paperwork snafu that lists a flu vaccine as a pneumonia vaccine has some Berks County seniors confused and irritated. Doctors and other flu vaccine providers began getting phone calls after Oct. 1 from seniors who said the routine explanation of benefits they receive after getting a treatment or therapy through Medicare listed the shot they thought was their seasonal flu vaccine as a pneumonia vaccine, said Charles Moran, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania Medical Society. "Explanations of benefits (or EOBs) are difficult enough for patients to decipher," Moran said. "Since early October, Medicare patients have been confused even more by an error on their EOBs that shows they got a pneumonia vaccine when they really received a flu vaccine.

Lawsuit Challenging W.Va. Vaccine Rule Dismissed

Damaging the Immune System
Via: Sfgate
A judge on Wednesday dismissed a lawsuit that challenged new vaccine requirements for schoolchildren, ruling that the Department of Health and Human Resources can impose them. Kanawha County Circuit Judge Tod Kaufman said in his decision that the immunization rule is consistent with state code and does not exceed the Legislature's limits on interpretive rules. The lawsuit argued that the department cannot require additional vaccines without the Legislature's approval.
"The main reason for my clients' challenge in the first place was not addressed at all," said Delegate Patrick Lane, an attorney who filed the lawsuit on behalf of six families. "The crux of our argument, the basis of our complaint, is that DHHR did not follow the proper legislative procedures that are required by statute."
The Kanawha Republican said he anticipates that his clients will appeal. State code requires children entering school for the first time to be immunized against diphtheria, polio, rubeola, tetanus and pertussis, or whooping cough.
Under the department's rule, incoming seventh-graders and 12th-graders must show proof they have received one dose of vaccines against meningitis, tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis. Incoming 12th-graders must show proof they received booster doses after age 16.

There’s a small LED on the head of the toothbrush to illuminate your mouth, and the tiny closed-circuit camera projects images from your pie hole right onto your bathroom mirror. After you’re done brushing, a UV light sterilizes the whole operation. It’s hard to see how the camera wouldn’t become completely covered with toothpaste during the course of brushing, but maybe the designers mean for users to give those chompers a toothpaste-free once-over with the camera after rinsing.
