3 States Mandating Flu Shots for Hospital Employees
Choice should be Mandatory |
Arkansas, Maine, Illinois. Those are just a few states with hospitals making it mandatory for their health care workers to get vaccinated. And some doctors who have refused to get their shot have lost their jobs. In Kearney, Good Samaritan employees must wear a mask if they opt out. Mary Lanning says employees can only refuse if they have an allergy, a history of neurological reactions or if they received the vaccine elsewhere.
St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island has an open policy and they're looking at making flu vaccinations mandatory in the future. When you walk into the lobby at St. Francis Medical Center you'll find flu warning signs posted throughout, tissue boxes handy and sanitizing dispensers at every corner. "I think it is time for us to look at a mandatory policy," said St. Francis Medical Center Director of Quality and Risk Management Beth Bartlett. Bartlett says it's not mandatory their staff gets the flu vaccine and neither is wearing a mask if they are unvaccinated. "Our goal is to be at minimally 90 percent to get vaccinated and this year I think we were only at 83% which was disappointing," said Bartlett. As healthcare care providers, why wouldn't staff members run to get vaccinated?
"A religious thing, if they think they have allergies, some people just don't like needles and they don't like to think about getting a shot, some people don't like to be told what they have to put into their bodies," said Bartlett. A common concern for some is getting sick from the vaccine. "You might have some minor symptoms when you get the vaccine but it's a lot less than if you don't get the vaccine and then end up getting exposed to the virus," Bartlett said. According to published reports, some workers at hospitals in Rhode Island and Illinois don't have a choice, it's mandatory and unvaccinated employees have been fired. Others have resigned citing issues of individual rights.
"It's difficult sometimes to get everybody on board with that because you have to hold people accountable to what you decide in the end, but as health care providers I think it's important for us to put our patients first," said Bartlett. Flu-related hospitalizations across the state have dropped slightly. In the meantime, flu activity is still widespread. Last week, in northeastern Nebraska another death was reported, making it a total of 3 so far this season.

First Coast Hospitals Mandate Flu Shots for Employees
Get Vaccine Exemption Forms |
What if your boss fired you because you didn't get a flu shot? That's the new policy for some hospitals across the nation. We did not find any hospitals in Jacksonville with that strict of policy. Baptist South ER Nurse Kelley Costlow knows the importance of getting a flu shot. "We see anywhere from 10 to 30 cases of flu-like systems every day," she said. She's part of the nearly 80 percent of the First Coast Baptist workforce who complied with the company's flu shot policy. And she said for a good reason. She explained, "For safety patient reasons, you don't want to expose your patients that you're taking care of to anything if you become sick." Costlow also wants to protect herself and her family, so she doesn't bring work germs back home.
Unlike some other hospitals in the country, Baptist is not firing anyone who refuses to get a shot. But, if employees say "no," they will have to explain. Employee Health Coordinator at Baptist Health Donna Cooley said, "We use that opportunity when they declined it so that we could educate them and see where the education needs were." Across town at St. Vincent's, the policy is a bit more strict for employees and vendors. "We've asked them to participate in a mandatory flu vaccination process," Jody Saffert said. Employees can opt out for religious or medical reasons. They can also just flat out refuse. "The stipulation is they need to meet with their manager and our division vice president to talk about their objections to the flu. And the reason for that is to help us understand what are some of those myths or objections so we can help rectify those," Saffert said. And if they don't want to explain themselves and watch an educational video on the flu shot, they will be suspended. At this time, they will not fire someone for not getting a flu shot.
Hospital administrators say the policies are in place for a very good reason. To protect their patients, and the workers who take care of them. Costlow said, "I wanted to get the flu vaccine." We called a number of hospitals in our area. Most say they have a policy regarding flu shots, and say next year, they will get more strict.

Holland Hospital Mandatory Flu Vaccination for Staff
Via: Hollandsentinel
Holland Hospital’s administration announced a mandatory flu vaccination policy beginning in the fall of 2013. The new policy applies to all Holland Hospital, Lakeshore Health Partners and Holland Hospital Services employees, medical staff, volunteers, contract employees and students. With the adoption of the mandatory flu vaccination policy, Holland Hospital joins several other major health care providers in west Michigan who require their employees and support staff to be vaccinated. “We have offered the flu vaccine on a voluntary basis for many years,” explains Matthew Fletcher, D.O., Internal Medicine specialist and hospital Infection Control Medical Director. “Approximately two-thirds of our workforce consistently received a flu shot. However, our goal is to have our entire staff receive the flu shot, except for those who are medically ineligible to receive it.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control, the national average of influenza vaccination among health care workers was estimated at 63.5% during the 2010-2011 flu season. The participation rate was 98.1% among healthcare workers who had an employer requirement for vaccination. “We want to protect our patients, employees, medical staff, volunteers, and their families safe from the flu virus,” Fletcher says. “Mandatory influenza vaccination has become the community standard. It’s the right thing to do.”

Hospitals Require Mandatory Flu Vaccines for Employees
Via: Walb
Getting a flu shot is probably your choice, but some professionals don't have a choice when it comes to getting vaccinated. Many hospitals require their employees to get a flu shot since they are around sick patients with weak immune systems. Miller county Hospital strongly encourages their employees to get the vaccine but does not make it mandatory, however there is an incentive to getting your flu shot. In the employee review at the end of the year there is an opportunity for your supervisor to acknowledge your willingness to participate because if we are not here to take care of patients that are sick, then obviously that is a concern," says Tim Fowler P. A., Miller Co. Hospital Emergency Room. Miller County Hospital has not seen many patients for flu symptoms. Fowler says that could be because the community's vaccination rate is above average.

Federal Court Admits Hepatitis B Vaccine Caused Fatal Auto-Immune Disorder
Via: TheIntelHub
In our society today, newborns are injected with loads of chemicals nearly as soon as they enter the world. In the name of “prevention”, we give them vaccines that we aren’t even sure are safe. As a matter of fact, in many cases, we know them to be unsafe. This is the case with the hepatitis B vaccine, approved for infants at birth but admittedly responsible for causing serious illness and even death. The United States Court of Federal Claims sided with the estate of Tambra Harris, who died as a result of an auto-immune disease called systemic lupose erythematosus (SLE).
The court awarded $475,000 following her death after finding the hepatitis vaccine caused her injury in the form of SLE. But this near-admittance of a cause-effect relationship between the vaccine and the illness and subsequent death isn’t enough. No, we still give the shot to babies. So, what is hepatitis B and why are we told that it is so important that newborn infants are vaccinated against it? Hepatitis B is not pleasant and can be deadly. But newborns (and the vast majority of people at any age) aren’t at risk of contracting the disease.
It’s spread by contact with bodily fluids, as in through unprotected sex or dirty needles. The risks associated with the hepatitis B vaccine are far more pressing than the risk of contracting the disease, says Dr. Jane Orient of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS). “For most children, the risk of a serious vaccine reaction may be 100 times greater than the risk of hepatitis B.” Still, newborns are given the vaccine within moments of entering the world.
Considered by many to be crimes against infants, the hep-b vaccination, the vaccine has been linked to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), multiple sclerosis, and other autoimmune disorders. Many experts have questioned the prolific use of the vaccine since it stepped on the scene a few decades ago. What’s more, many parents are starting to question the need for the vaccine. “In increasing numbers, parents across the country are contacting the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) to report opposition to regulations being enacted by state health department officials that legally require children to be injected with three doses of hepatitis B vaccine before being allowed to attend daycare, kindergarten, elementary school, high school or college,” National Vaccine Information Center reads. As a parent, it is still your decision whether or not to vaccinate your child. There is plenty of research out there to help guide you in this decision. Don’t let your doctor or the people around you be your only source of information. Do your research and determine the best solution for your child’s long-term health.

40% of Missouri Hospitals Will Fire Workers who Refuse Flu Shots
Via: Ozarksfirst
Worried about catching the flu if you visit a loved one in the hospital? A new survey of Missouri hospitals may ease that fear. A survey done by the Missouri Hospital Association shows more than 50 percent of hospitals reported that 95 to 100 percent of their employees were vaccinated against seasonal influenza. Only 12 percent had a vaccination rate of less than 70 percent. That same survey says more than 85 percent of hospitals in Missouri have vacinnation polices and 97 percent have that policy in place for all employees, not just those with direct patient contact. Nearly 80 percent of them have mandatory policies. And of hospitals with a mandatory vaccination policy, nearly 40 percent say employees can be fired for refusing to comply.

Vaccine Court Awards Millions to Two Children With Autism
MMR Linked to Autism |
The federal Vaccine Injury Compensation Program, better known as "vaccine court," has just awarded millions of dollars to two children with autism for "pain and suffering" and lifelong care of their injuries, which together could cost tens of millions of dollars. The government did not admit that vaccines caused autism, at least in one of the children. Both cases were "unpublished," meaning information is limited, and access to medical records and other exhibits is blocked. Much of the information presented here comes from documents found at the vaccine court website. Some observers will say the vaccine-induced encephalopathy (brain disease) documented in both children is unrelated to their autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Others will say there is plenty of evidence to suggest otherwise. What's more, these cases fit the pattern of other petitions, (i.e., Poling and Banks) in which the court ruled (or the government conceded) that vaccines had caused encephalopathy, which in turn produced permanent injury, including symptoms of autism and ultimately an ASD diagnosis. And most of these children now have taxpayer dollars earmarked for applied behavioral analysis (ABA), an effective therapy specifically designed to treat ASD.
Meanwhile, parents, grandparents, friends and neighbors of both children testified they were developmentally normal, if not advanced for their age when they developed seizures, spiking fevers and other adverse reactions to their vaccines. According to these eyewitnesses, the children never fully recovered, and instead began losing vocabulary, eye contact and interest in others around them, all classic symptoms of regressive autism. In the first case, involving a 10-year-old boy from Northern California named Ryan Mojabi, the parents allege that "all the vaccinations" received from 2003-2005, and "more specifically, measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccinations," caused a "severe and debilitating injury to his brain, described as Autism Spectrum Disorder ('ASD')." The parents, who did not want to be interviewed, specifically asserted that Ryan "suffered a Vaccine Table Injury, namely, an encephalopathy" as a result of his MMR vaccination on December 19, 2003." ("Table injuries" are known, compensable adverse reactions to immunizations.)
Alternatively, they claim that "as a cumulative result of his receipt of each and every vaccination between March 25, 2003 and February 22, 2005, Ryan has suffered . . . neuroimmunologically mediated dysfunctions in the form of asthma and ASD." In vaccine court, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services acts as the defendant and Justice Department attorneys act as counsel. In 2009, Ryan's case was transferred to vaccine court's Autism Omnibus Proceedings, according to the docket. A year-and-a-half later, the government conceded that MMR vaccine had indeed caused Ryan's encephalopathy. HHS agreed that "Ryan suffered a Table injury under the Vaccine Act -- namely, an encephalitis within five to fifteen days following receipt," of MMR, records show. "This case is appropriate for compensation." Whether HHS agreed with Ryan's parents that his vaccine-induced brain disease led to ASD is unknown. The concession document is under seal.
